| "I believe in working collaboratively with our clients to understand each client’s needs and to choose a strategy that best suits the client’s unique circumstances. Good communication includes listening deeply to the client, explaining the pros and cons of various legal options, and answering questions with the approach that all questions are good questions. I combine my understanding of the client’s needs and circumstances with aggressive advocacy, creative thinking and an overall strategic vision of the case in order to achieve a successful outcome.” |
Sumeeta Gawande is a partner in the Firm’s Litigation Department. She has been in practice for more than ten years, specializing in business litigation and appeals in the federal and state courts. She represents business litigants in both civil and criminal matters, including but not limited to complex contractual disputes (disputes related to goods and services provided, purchase and sale of businesses, joint business ventures, shareholder/partnership agreements, secured and unsecured loans, construction, environmental contamination, among others), white collar criminal defense (securities fraud, tax fraud, insurance fraud, structuring, etc.), qui tam false claims act litigation, a range of medical practice issues, and a variety of other matters. Her clients include individual entrepreneurs, professionals, businesses, franchises and publicly-traded companies.
Before joining Greenberg Dauber Epstein & Tucker, Ms. Gawande clerked for the Honorable Ronald L. Ellis, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, and prior to that for the Honorable Naomi G. Eichen, in the New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division. In 2006 and 2007, she was named a “Rising Star” by New Jersey Monthly Magazine, which awards that designation to the top 2.5 percent of attorneys in the state who are 40 or under or who have been practicing for ten years or less. She was also recognized for her professional achievement by the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association of New Jersey.
Ms. Gawande's approach to litigation is strategic, creative and interactive. After gaining a thorough command of the facts of the case, Ms. Gawande works closely with her clients to fashion a litigation strategy that achieves the best result. Ms. Gawande believes that the client's input is an integral part of preparing the case, and she therefore maintains regular contact with her clients about the development of the case and its issues. Creativity is often a key to success in Ms. Gawande's cases; crafting innovative strategies is a hallmark of her approach. Combining that creativity with preparation, diligence and thoroughness has led to success in many of her cases.
Ms. Gawande was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Athens, Ohio. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts at Cornell University and her juris doctorate from Rutgers Law School-Newark, where she was an Arthur Kinoy Fellow, a recipient of the Judge Skelley Wright Award, and the Co-Editor in Chief of the Women's Rights Law Journal. She is a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Arbitration Advisory Committee, a Cornell Alumni Class Officer, and a Board Member of the Rutgers Law School-Newark Alumni Association. She is also a member of the Asian Pacific American Lawyers Association, the South Asian Bar Association of New Jersey, and the New Jersey State Bar Association. |
