"The key to effective estate planning is listening to the client.  Each situation is unique.  An estate plan must reflect what is important to the client, not what is important to the attorney.  The attorney must guide the client through the process using the attorney’s expertise to accomplish the client’s goals, which must always remain the focus.”

Mary E. Scrupski is Counsel in the Firm’s Tax, Estates, and Trusts Department.  With more than twenty years experience, she has advised clients on a wide variety of estate and trust related matters.  Her clients range from individuals with special needs children, to business owners seeking to transfer their businesses to the next generation in the most tax and cost effective means possible, to families with sizeable wealth in need of sophisticated tax savings techniques, such as family limited partnerships and dynasty trusts.  Ms. Scrupski is also attuned to opportunities which arise through changes in the law, as well as fluctuations in the markets, which make certain estate planning techniques better suited at any particular point in time to meet her clients’ goals.

She also has extensive experience in the area of estate and trust administration.  Having served as an executor and trustee herself, she can advise clients, both individuals and institutions, based on knowledge and experience.  She also represents beneficiaries of estates and trusts and advises them on their rights as ultimate recipients of the assets.

She is a frequent lecturer for community organizations on estate and trust issues, and taught the New Jersey Continuing Legal Education skills and methods course on estate planning and administration to newly admitted attorneys from 1998 through 2006.  She is a published author and has been quoted in the media with respect to her expertise, most recently in the "Ask the Biz Brain" column in The Star-Ledger.

Ms. Scrupski is a former board member and treasurer of SAGE, an organization located in Summit, New Jersey serving senior citizens, and in 2004 served as president of the Summit Business and Professional Women’s club.  She resides in Monmouth County where she has served as a member of the board of trustees for the Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts.
